Headline Style and Nominal Endings

Newspaper headlines use a style very different from everyday speech in order to save space and compress only the core information.

The most striking feature is ending the predicate with a noun form, or omitting it entirely. Instead of a full verb like '~ํ–ˆ๋‹ค', a headline ends in a bare noun or a clipped form such as '~ํ‚ค๋กœ'.

Nominal Endings

์ •๋ถ€, ๋‚ด๋…„ ์˜ˆ์‚ฐ 12์กฐ ์› ์ฆ์•ก
jeongbu, naenyeon yesan 12jo won jeungaek
Government to increase next year's budget by 12 trillion won. (Note: ends in the noun '์ฆ์•ก', not a verb.)
์—ฌ์•ผ, ๋ฒ•์•ˆ ์ฒ˜๋ฆฌ ํ•ฉ์˜ ๋ถˆ๋ฐœ
yeoya, beoban cheori habui bulbal
Ruling and opposition parties fail to reach agreement on bill. ('๋ถˆ๋ฐœ' = failure to materialize, used as a noun ending.)

Omission of Particles and Predicates

ํ•œ๊ตญ ์ˆ˜์ถœ 3๊ฐœ์›” ์—ฐ์† ์ฆ๊ฐ€โ€ฆ ๋ฐ˜๋„์ฒด๊ฐ€ ๊ฒฌ์ธ
hanguk suchul 3gaewol yeonsok jeungaโ€ฆ bandochega gyeonin
Korean exports rise for 3rd straight month... led by semiconductors. (Subject particles dropped; 'โ€ฆ' signals continuation.)
Headline formFull sentenceMeaning
~ํ‚ค๋กœ~ํ•˜๊ธฐ๋กœ ํ–ˆ๋‹คdecided to ~
~๋ฐํ˜€~์„ ๋ฐํ˜”๋‹คrevealed / stated
~๋…ผ๋ž€~์„ ๋‘˜๋Ÿฌ์‹ผ ๋…ผ๋ž€์ด ์ผ๊ณ  ์žˆ๋‹คcontroversy over ~
~ํ•  ๋“ฏ~ํ•  ๊ฒƒ์œผ๋กœ ๋ณด์ธ๋‹คlikely to ~

Headlines also use the comma to split subject from predicate, while the interpunct (ยท) links coordinate items of equal weight.

Present Tense for Past Events

Headlines write even completed events in the present tense to convey vividness and immediacy. Rather than '๋Œ€ํ†ต๋ น์ด ๋ฐฉ๋ฌธํ–ˆ๋‹ค' (the president visited), they write '๋Œ€ํ†ต๋ น ๋ฐฉ๋ฌธ' or '๋Œ€ํ†ต๋ น, ํ˜„์ง€ ๋ฐฉ๋ฌธ'.

๊ตญ์ œ์œ ๊ฐ€ ๊ธ‰๋“ฑโ€ฆ ์ฃผ์œ ์†Œ ๊ธฐ๋ฆ„๊ฐ’ ๋“ค์ฉ
gukjeyuga geupdeungโ€ฆ juyuso gireumgap deulsseok
International oil prices surge... gas station fuel prices unsettled. (Both predicates are noun forms.)
์—ฌ์•ผ ๋Œ€ํ‘œ ํšŒ๋™, ๋ฏผ์ƒ ๋ฒ•์•ˆ ์ฒ˜๋ฆฌ '๊ณต๊ฐ'
yeoya daepyo hoedong, minsaeng beoban cheori 'gonggam'
Ruling and opposition leaders meet, 'agree' on handling livelihood bills. (Quotes mark a paraphrased term.)
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: When reading a headline, mentally restore the omitted particles and predicates. '์ •๋ถ€, ์˜ˆ์‚ฐ ์ฆ์•ก' becomes '์ •๋ถ€๊ฐ€ ์˜ˆ์‚ฐ์„ ์ฆ์•กํ•˜๊ธฐ๋กœ ํ–ˆ๋‹ค' (the government decided to increase the budget).
