Everyday Abbreviations

An abbreviation is a long word or phrase shortened for convenience. Korean speakers use abbreviations constantly in daily conversation. In this lesson we'll learn the most common everyday ones.

1. μ•Œλ°” (Part-time job)

'μ•Œλ°”' is short for 'μ•„λ₯΄λ°”μ΄νŠΈ,' a loanword from the German 'Arbeit,' and means a part-time job. Both students and working adults use it naturally.

주말에 μΉ΄νŽ˜μ—μ„œ μ•Œλ°”ν•΄μš”.
Jumare kapeeseo albahaeyo.
I work part-time at a cafe on weekends.

2. μ…€μΉ΄ (Selfie)

'μ…€μΉ΄' is a Konglish blend short for 'self camera' β€” exactly the English 'selfie.'

μ—¬ν–‰ κ°€μ„œ μ…€μΉ΄ 많이 μ°μ—ˆμ–΄μš”.
Yeohaeng gaseo selka mani jjigeosseoyo.
I took a lot of selfies on the trip.

3. 치λ§₯ (Chicken and beer)

'치λ§₯' fuses the first syllables of 'μΉ˜ν‚¨' (chicken) and 'λ§₯μ£Ό' (beer). It's the icon of Korea's beloved late-night food culture.

였늘 저녁에 치λ§₯ μ–΄λ•Œμš”?
Oneul jeonyeoge chimaek eottaeyo?
How about chicken and beer tonight?

4. 카톑 / κΉ”λ‹€ (KakaoTalk / to install)

'카톑' shortens 'KakaoTalk,' Korea's default messenger, and even works as a verb, 'μΉ΄ν†‘ν•˜λ‹€' (to message on KakaoTalk). 'κΉ”λ‹€' is a casual way to say 'install (an app)' in place of the formal 'μ„€μΉ˜ν•˜λ‹€.'

이따 μΉ΄ν†‘μœΌλ‘œ μ£Όμ†Œ 보내 μ€„κ²Œ.
Itta katogeuro juso bonae julge.
I'll send you the address over KakaoTalk later. (casual)
κ·Έ μ•± κΉ”μ•˜μ–΄? 같이 μ“°μž.
Geu aep kkarasseo? Gachi sseuja.
Did you install that app? Let's use it together. (casual)

5. A few more worth knowing

'μƒνŒŒ' = '생일 νŒŒν‹°' (birthday party), and '점메좔' = '점심 메뉴 μΆ”μ²œ' (a lunch-menu recommendation). Abbreviations like these spread fast among peers.

내일 λ‚΄ μƒνŒŒμ— 올 거지?
Naeil nae saengpa-e ol geoji?
You're coming to my birthday party tomorrow, right? (casual)
λ°°κ³ ν”„λ‹€, 점메좔 μ’€ ν•΄ 쀘.

I'm starving β€” recommend me something for lunch. (casual/slang)
