Place & Time: 에 / 에서

The particles 에 (e) and 에서 (eseo) both relate to place, but they are used differently. 에 marks a destination, a location of existence, or a time, while 에서 marks where an action happens or a starting point.

에 for existence and destination

Attach 에 to a place with verbs of existence and movement such as 있다 (itda, to exist), 없다 (eopda, to not exist), 가다 (gada, to go), and 오다 (oda, to come). Also use 에 with time expressions.

학교에 있어요.
hakgyo-e isseoyo.
I am at school.
집에 가요.
jip-e gayo.
I go home.
세 시에 만나요.
se si-e mannayo.
Let's meet at three o'clock.
교실에 책상이 많아요.
gyosil-e chaeksang-i manayo.
There are many desks in the classroom.
주말에 쉬어요.
jumal-e swieoyo.
I rest on the weekend.

에서 for the place of an action

Use 에서 to mark the place where an action occurs, with verbs like 공부하다 (gongbuhada, to study), 먹다 (meokda, to eat), and 일하다 (ilhada, to work).

도서관에서 공부해요.
doseogwan-eseo gongbuhaeyo.
I study at the library.
식당에서 밥을 먹어요.
sikdang-eseo bap-eul meogeoyo.
I eat a meal at the restaurant.
한국에서 왔어요.
hanguk-eseo wasseoyo.
I came from Korea.

Same place, different particle

The same place can take a different particle depending on the verb. Compare 집에 있어요 (I'm at home) with 집에서 놀아요 (I play at home): a place takes 에 with 있다/가다 but 에서 with active verbs.

ParticleUseExample
에 (e)existence, destination, time집에 있어요 (I'm at home)
에서 (eseo)action place, starting point집에서 자요 (I sleep at home)

Common mistake

학교에서 가요 is incorrect. Since 가다 marks a destination, the correct sentence is 학교에 가요.

💡 Tip: When in doubt: use 에 with 있다/가다, and 에서 with verbs of active motion.
