Common Writing Errors
Even advanced learners often slip up on spelling, word spacing, and the written-versus-spoken distinction. This lesson reviews the most frequent errors in Korean composition.
Spelling: 'doe' vs. 'dwae', 'an' vs. 'anh'
'dwae' is a contraction of 'doeeo', so write 'dwae' wherever it makes sense to expand it to 'doeeo'. 'an' is an adverb, whereas 'anh' is a contraction of the verb 'anihada'.
Spacing: bound nouns and particles
Bound nouns such as 'geot', 'su', 'ba', and 'ttae' are spaced from the preceding word, while particles such as '-mankeum', '-daero', and '-ppun' are attached.
Confusing particles and endings ('-roseo' / '-rosseo', '-meuro' / '-meumeuro')
'-roseo' marks a qualification or status, while '-rosseo' marks a means or instrument. '-(eu)meuro' indicates a reason, whereas '-(eu)meuro(sseo)' indicates a means, so the two must be clearly distinguished.
Written vs. spoken register
Avoid colloquial expressions such as 'geunde', 'eomcheong', 'doege', and '~geodeunyo' in formal writing; replace them respectively with 'geureonde', 'maeu', and '~gi ttaemunida'.

π‘ Tip: When proofreading, substitute 'ha/hae' for 'doe/dwae'. If 'hae' sounds natural, 'dwae' is correct; if 'ha' sounds natural, 'doe' is correct.
